Party in the house... everyone's happy, smiling, singing, dancing, cracking jokes and I'm just sad...
I still see Mr. F at work every day but it's kinda awkward now... lol. He's acting all shy and avoiding me... haha

Of Mehendis and Shaadis
I've been busy attending friends' mehendis and shaadis in Karachi. The arrangements are more lavish and creative every time. Yesterday's mehendi theme was bright pink and baby blue (it used to be green, orange and yellow eons ago but I guess times are a'changing!). The girls from bride's side were wearing peshwazs (long flowing frocks with skinny trousers underneath) and the girls from the groom's side were in ghagras (long flowing skirts with heavily worked blouses). The guys on both sides wore kurta shalwars...
The invitation said 9:30 pm so my friend and I arrived around 10:30 pm, thinking we'd be fashionably late. Alas, NO ONE was there except for the bride's siblings and immediate family... so we sat around and listened to bollywood music playing in the background. They played this song
at least 5 times in the space of an hour. For anyone who's watched the movie, this song is played when the girl (Zubaida) is being forced to marry someone against her will and tries to commit suicide by shooting herself in the head with her dad's gun :p Now, why would you play that at anyone's wedding?!
At long last, the groom arrived at 11:30 pm singing and dancing with his friends... It was funny though, because he had to stop and pose at multiple intervals for the video and video guys made him repeat the moves a couple of times :)
The bride arrived at midnight in a doli (a wooden box/carriage decorated with flowers carried by the bride's brothers and cousins). The groom was polite enough to come down from the stage and receive her (some grooms are lazy, and remain sitting, waiting for the bride to come to them :p). After that, they had a couple of dance performances but the diyas kept blowing out because of the wind so they had to do without. At that point, I was exhausted and my hair was getting frizzy thanks to the humidity, so I went home, had a sandwich and went to bed :)

Happy Anniversary!
Ammi and Abbu celebrated their twenty-fourth wedding anniversary last week. Next year inshallah will be the big 25 but we decided to make this one special too since the whole family was finally together.
My mom met my dad for the first time on their wedding day. Luckily, my dad was a good guy and it turned out ok :) He said "hi" to her when they finally got to sit together but she didn't reply, being the nice, demure Pakistani bride of the eighties, even though they both came from "liberal" family backgrounds :p
My brother and I would save up each year and buy a gift for our parents. We'd plan ahead and get our grandparents to take us shopping because we wanted it to be a surprise and neither of us was old enough to drive. I'd make a card, get flowers and bake/buy a cake and we'd usually go out for an (extended) family dinner. Now, my sister makes the card and I end up paying since I'm technically "grown-up" :p
And this is their song... cheesy, yes, but we're like that :)

Ana Confused Jiddan
Does living at high speed slow down the relentless march of time?
Every day is busy, but every day is pretty much the same... I wake up, go to work, work, have lunch, work some more, come home, have dinner and sleep and see more or less the same people every day. I guess that's what makes time "fly". As a child, each experience was unique, there were many firsts and each day brought new promise. College was still a time for self-discovery, for experiencing many firsts. But the older I get, the gap between new experiences gets longer. I have a routine, a job and more responsibilities (which I'm thankful for). But I find myself actively making an effort to break out of my comfort zone, trying new things, going on exotic holidays, meeting different kinds of people, tasting new foods.
I feel the clock ticking and I know I can't do everything. I have too many conflicting priorities...
Latest discovery... Anime =)

O'Level Farewell
Right now, I'm listening to Simarik... Back in the day, this song was the rage at all our farewells and school parties :P It seems like such a long time ago when I was the naive, *innocent* and carefree fifteen-year-old wearing her mom's sari to her O'Levels farewell party.
All the guys and girls in our class had gathered at Jimmy's for the mandatory photo shoot. The girls looked stunning (our moms had gone overboard with the hair and make-up; these days, most girls go to the salon) and the guys wore suits, hair done up in spikes or slicked back with gel. We were all feeling more than a little self-conscious, not used to seeing each other in anything other than the school uniform and hormones were raging. That evening, some guys got the spunk to let the objects of their affection know "how they felt about them". Seven years later, one of those couples got married and another is now engaged :)
The evening entertainment included a fashion show and a concert by Messiah. The junior class gave us titles (painstakingly written on clay pots) and the graduating class gave titles to the teachers (engraved in silver tablets). After the King and Queen were announced, we had a marathon photo session and finally, the class picture (which is now tucked away somewhere in my cupboard at home).
By that time, most of us were starving and dinner was served. The guys being sweet and chivalrous for once got food for us girls since we hadn't quite mastered the art of walking long distances in sarees and high heels :P. There was caramel crunch icecream for dessert and though I used to think it was icky then, I wish I could have it again one more time.
It was almost midnight, and they opened up the "dance floor" complete with a DJ and strobe lights (it used to be a big deal back then). Some people busted out the dance moves and really got "into" it. My friends and I being somewhat shareef, sat at our table and waited for our parents to pick us up. All in all, it was night full of memories to cherish and now, I look back and smile at what were some of the best days of my life with some of the craziest (and bestest) people I've known...
